I began my teaching career at the age of 16, teaching young children to dance in the basement of my parent’s home. In 1978, Stage I Dance Academy opened at its present location. I have studied and performed dance since the age of 4. I have also studied drama, voice, and piano. I am a certified dance instructor through Dance Educators of America having attended their teacher training school at Western Kentucky University, and I am now a Regional Chairperson. Each year, my staff and I attend conventions and training sessions throughout the country to study with master teachers in all forms of dance. We also bring well-known master teachers to our studio to teach classes directly to our students. This gives our dancers the opportunities to learn the latest styles and techniques from master teachers from across the United States. Through our relationships with these master teachers, many of our dancers have been given opportunities to study and perform after they graduate.
I have produced and directed shows for Stage I Performing Dance Company students on dance tours to Australia, Italy, The Caribbean, Mexico, Bermuda, and Hawaii. I was named Show Director of the Year in 1996 by the New Olympian International Show Teams Organization. In June of 2006, eighteen Performing Company dancers, their families, and my husband and I cruised on the Royal Caribbean ship, Freedom of the Seas. The dancers performed two shows onboard the ship. Our show and the dancers received outstanding reviews from the cruise director and the passengers. It has been a tradition for the past 10 years for Performing Company dancers and families to be invited to be a part of these wonderful cruise performances and vacations.
My love for making a positive difference in the lives of children through the art of dance has continued to grow throughout the last 51 years. It has been through my faith in God, a very supportive husband and family, and the friendship of many wonderful people along the way that I have been blessed with doing a job that I love. Year after year, I reap the benefits of seeing the lives that I have touched as former dancers return to visit or become part of our staff.
It is very important to me that Stage I Dance Academy is known as “The Step Above Dance School Where Every Child Receives the Same Special Attention” and where every teacher is dedicated to giving her students a positive dance experience and a love for the art.
